    Fertiliser Spreading

Fertiliser spreading refers to the various ways of distributing fertilisers so that they can be effectively utilised by the target plants. There are actually several ways of spreading fertilisers. Depending on the species of plant, environmental conditions and intended results, specific ways of fertiliser spreading can be used. Fertiliser spreading can be classified into four basic categories, namely, manual fertiliser spreading, machine-assisted fertiliser spreading, fast release fertiliser spreading and time-release fertiliser spreading.

Manual fertiliser spreading simply involves the use of the hands, with or without gloves, in scattering fertiliser over the target area. Solid fertiliser granules or chunks of compost are used in manual fertiliser spreading. This method is sufficient for small-scale application of fertiliser, such as lawn or garden application. Manual fertiliser spreading is also commonly used for nursery seedlings. The fertiliser may even be mixed directly with the soil in the soil bags or soil pots.

Machine-assisted fertiliser spreading is commonly used for large-scale agricultural applications. Machine-assisted fertiliser spreading ranges from simple hand-held sprayers to airplane-mounted sprayers. On the other hand, fast-release and time-release fertiliser spreading modes are dependent on the way the fertiliser products are manufactured. Fast-release fertilisers are absorbed quickly by plants and may require several applications. For many garden-related applications, however, time-release fertiliser spreading is the ideal means, particularly for turfs.
