Deadly Reptiles In Suburbia

Illawarra Mercury

Saturday January 7, 2006

FIGTREE man Don Gulloch quickly forgot about his lawn-mowing duties yesterday when he saw a venomous red-bellied black snake.

"I was just about to mow my lawn when I noticed this black thing in the grass," he said.

"The dog has been barking in the backyard for a few days and I found a skin about six-foot long in the yard a couple of weeks ago. I guess it belonged to that (snake)."

Police Rescue Sergeant Manni Verzosa and Constable Damian Logue turned up with a bag yesterday and the slithery situation was soon solved. It was the second snake report the team attended yesterday.

"We went to Eager St at Corrimal earlier where we had a six-foot diamond python," Sgt Verzosa said. "It was huge and fat and it was found basking itself in the backyard of a unit."

Officers released the python in bush near the Bulli mine and the red-bellied blake snake was released in the bush at Kembla Grange.
